THE PROJECT
THE SITE FOR GURU NANGSI ZILNON STATUE

Map of Bhutan

Bhutan is composed of 20 administrative districts called Dzongkhags. Lhuntsi Dzongkhag is one of the 20 Dzongkhags situated in the extreme North East of Bhutan. Although connected by all season motorable road Lhuntsi is by and large still in the wilderness. In each Dzongkhag there are number of villages and Tangmachhu is a popular village among several villages under the Dzongkhag administration Lhuntsi.

Takela is a beautiful spot - a gift of nature, located at the highest point above the Tangmachu village and is situated on a mountain range that gently descends down to the Kurichu River. The spot resembles a shoulder breaking the smoothness of a mountain range - a kind of a miniature plateau overlooking the picturesque Tangmachhu middle secondary school about 1000 meters below, along the same range. Also overlooking on the left are Tangmachu, Minjey, Phag Dung, and Khashaling villages and on the right are Ngyayebi, Zhungkhar, Dhangling, and Nenbhi villages - the Guru Statue location commands a very scenic view as these villages / settlements surround the Takela in the three directions (East, South, and West).

AS destiny should have it, the location at takela cannot be better than anywhere else for installing the most revered statue of Guru Nangsi Zilnon - the Second Buddha very close to an old dilapidated Tangmachu Public Lhakhang. The site belongs to 160 households of Tangmachu village as a common property while some of them even have Thrams (registration of landed property). When Venerable Khempo Karpo Rimpoche announced the plans for the construction of Guru Statue, all the owners unanimously offered / contributed the land along with the old Lhakhang for the noble cause of the Odiyana Project. Out of the four thram holders two of them offered their land for free while the other two charged nominal payments. On account of this no person has been affected or rendered landless. The project has now almost 17 acres of land for the Odiyana Project.

As far as ground stability is concerned, the soil condition and its properties are deemed right for such a construction. The area is however subject to heavy South East winds for which the 148 feet tall Guru Statue (including the Sengthri) has to be designed to withstand. Venerable Khempo Karpo and his team are determined to build this mammoth structure through contributions and other sources (outlined in the project description) in a period of 3 to 4 years starting mid 2007.
